Eli Terry Model 3 pillar & scroll, ca. 1820. This
was the first “production model” pillar and scroll made by Eli Terry and is referred to as the “outside escapement” model. AAC
sold one last summer and I detailed its development here. This model had a short production run before Model 5 became the standard
for pillar & scrolls. The case is 27.5 inches tall without the finials, and the finish is noticeably alligatored from repeated
coats of varnish. The solid brass finials have square peg openings and are very old, but not likely original. The brass
medallion in the middle of the scroll top center post is interesting and certainly old, but not typical. Note that the left
scroll has been repaired, and on the back of the center mount ‘VI’ is stamped into the post. The dial glass is old but thinner
than is typical; the putty holding it in place is very old. The lower glass is modern, as is the well-done tablet; it is held
in place with small nails. The skirt is likely original (as is the scroll top) and has had some repairs. The wooden dial
shows wear and the numerals and inside minute markers have been re-inked. The thick pewter hands are proper and old, possibly
original, but have been painted. The wooden 30-hour movement is attached to the back of the dial; I see no repairs, and when
the substitute weights are hung I can get it to run and strike a bit. These are not the original weights, but they fit the weight
chutes. There is a good original label inside. Despite the problems with the finish this is a very original example, and
it looks darn good. AAC sold a Model 3 last summer for $2103. $1800-$2500.
