83.              $300

Seth Thomas “Parlor Calendar No. 1”, 1877. This is the later version of this model; the earlier 1863 model, with a panel between the dials, is more common.  The 33-inch case has been re-veneered, as there no chips to be found – 1877 rosewood veneer does not hold up that well.  The finish is rough in spots from multiple coats of varnish, but nonetheless it looks great.  Both glasses are old, but the dials are paper over the original painted zinc pans.  This rare clock deserves painted dials to go with the great veneer.  The hands are correct. The signed, 8-day, time-and-strike, weight-driven movement runs for a short while and stops.  It strikes if you advance the hands, and the calendar advances with authority.  There is a ‘do not oil’ label behind the old calendar, and an instruction label on the back of the door that lets you know this clock was put in service December 1, 1877 and bought that summer by Adin A. Bennett. Schmitt Horan sold this version along with a small calendar clock in 2021 for $375, the only recent sale I can find for this uncommon model.  $300-$500.
