Welch, Spring & Co. “Regulator Calendar No. 1”, ca. 1878.  This is an early weight-driven calendar clock, 52 inches long with a very old finish, possibly original. The rosewood veneer has been removed from the outer bezel, but it is in pretty good shape otherwise, just in need of some cleaning and polish.  The base is missing a piece of edge trim on the left side.  The dial + bezel is 23.5 inches across, and the dial has a 16-inch-diameter chapter ring.  This clock was made with a 16 inch and 18 inch dial.  The three glasses are old, the bottom glass likely redone.  Both painted dials appear to be original, with some flaking on the time dial.  The calendar and time hands are original, the weekday calendar hand is a poor replacement and is not securely mounted; it will need repair or replacement. Early examples of this model used an upside-down brass plate movement, as found here (note the winding arbors above the mainstem). It is weight-driven with two appropriate cast iron weights and is running, but stops irregularly.  The B.B. Lewis calendar mechanism in the middle door is functional and advances appropriately.  The original black paper backing on the backboard is present but there is no label.  It is possible that this example was originally sold by B.B. Lewis & Son, and hence, no Welch, Spring label.  See Ly, Welch Clocks, 2nd Edition, pages 187-189 for details.  AAC sold a later model with an 18-inch dial and a standard 8-day movement last July for $1500.  $850-$1500.
