56.              $250

Riggs Brothers No. 5 banjo, ca. 1870. The movement is stamped “Riggs, Philad’a” indicating that this clock was retailed by the Riggs about 1870.  The pendulum bob is hooked to the wooden stick, characteristic of George Hatch-style banjos made in North Attleboro MA; Hatch (and Williams) made clocks for Riggs from 1867-1871.  The cherry case is 29 inches long with an old finish and very little grain painting remaining. The dial glass is a green glass replacement, the lower glasses are period but were repainted long ago – rather than gold leaf, the patterns are done with paint.  The dial was repainted as well, as it should have the Riggs signature.  The hands are likely original.  The 8-day, time-only movement is running without problem, driven by a proper iron weight.  $250-$400.
