55.              $400

Howard & Davis “Banjo No. 5”, ca. 1858. A 29-inch grain-painted case, dark and possibly original finish.  The number ‘111’ is stamped into the dial door hinge and lower door frame.  The three glasses are old and likely original, the original putty holds the dial glass in place.  The tablet glass is cracked but stable, the throat and tablet may have been rebacked.  The dial is almost certainly the original paper, dirty, crackled, and worn.  It is signed.  The 8-day, time-only movement will only run for a few minutes and will need to be cleaned.  The cast iron weight is marked ‘5’, the weight shield is original with a retailer’s partial label.  A very original example.  AAC sold an H&D No. 5 last summer for $500.  $400-$600.
