Seth Thomas “Regulator
No. 6”, year unknown. This appears to be a reconstructed/restored or, possibly, bench-made No. 6. The case appears to
be a fully refinished early model, or one of the Seth Thomas reissues from 1975. However, there is no label that normally was
attached to the reissues. The finials, top and bottom, all match and are all wrong, but not terribly wrong. A good effort
to make something that looked about right. The door glass is old. The base may have been re-veneered, it is quite excellent. Look at the backboard interior; I have never seen one like it, routed out, painted black, and with a nice burl panel. Even a
beat scale, although not ST issue. The dial board again appears to be original issue, but the metal dial has been replaced with
a wood panel that has a paper ST dial. The paper has yellowed. The original zinc dial must have been badly warped and
degraded to warrant replacement with a wood and paper dial! The minute and hour hand are proper, the seconds hand is not ST
issue. The 8-day, time-only movement appears to be an original ST movement, unsigned, as most are. It is the standard
movement for this model. The pendulum stick and damascened nickel bob are also ST issue, as best I can tell. So is the
nickel weight. The clock is running without problem. Make what you will of this clock, it is very attractive and could
be improved with a new dial. I will price it like a 1975 reissue, which AAC sold two years ago for $350. $350-$700.
