Antique American Clocks February 2023
JG-21. $150
E.N. Welch Mfg. Co. “Dewey”, ca. 1900. It
seems every clock company made a clock honoring Admiral Dewey, hero of the Spanish-American War. This is Welch’s version, and
it is a difficult version to find. The pressed wood oak case is 24 inches tall with a clean finish. The door glass shows
his flagship, the Olympia, in gold stenciling; the glass is old. The signed 8-day, time-and-strike movement is clean but the
time side is frozen, and will need some attention; the strike side is running fine. It strikes on the hours and half-hours on
a wire gong. The alarm is hooked up but not tested; the pendulum is Welch issue. There is a partial label on the back. No recent sales of the Welch Dewey, but McInnis Auction sold one in 2015 for $1300. That seems a bit high today. $150-$300.
