Bradley & Hubbard “Topsey”, ca. 1870. A
17-inch cast iron blinking eye clock in very original condition. I have had several of this model, including one I own, and
this is the most original one I have come across. The color and pattern on the skirt is typical, as is the color of the blouse. Her eyes have brown irises with black pupils and they move up and down with the tick of the clock. The glass is old, the paper
dial likely original, the minute hand is a modern proper replacement. The base is painted to resemble marble, I have not seen
that before (nor have I seen irises on the eyes). This model does not bear a foundry or maker stamp on the bottom. The
30-hour time-only lever movement is running and the original eyes are bobbing; the movement is not signed, again typical. AAC
sold a Topsey in Jan 2021 for $600; Cottone’s sold one this spring for $2700, and Schmitt Horan sold a very similar example last month
for $1300. $600-$1200.
