Herbert Scott electromagnetic clock, 1904-1912. This is a rare electromagnetic clock in which the pendulum swings forward and back to move the diagonal escape wheel forward (see
photos). Two electromagnets behind the pendulum bob provide a brief impulse to the pendulum; as the pendulum eventually slows
in its swing it closes a circuit (by a very clever mechanism) to again energize the electromagnets and provide a new impulse to the
pendulum (a variant of the Hipp toggle mechanism). Englishman Herbert Scott patented the mechanism in 1902; about 500 were made
by the Ever Ready Specialties Company, a British subsidiary of the Eveready Battery Co. between 1904 and 1912. There were at
least three versions of this clock. The clock sits on a mahogany base with four brass column mounts; the 4.5-inch dial is porcelain. The case has four beveled glasses and a matching mahogany top, and stands 14.5 inches tall on small leveling feet. You can find
similar examples on the internet with the help of Google. This clock is untested, and you’ll need to supply a battery. Schmitt Horan sold a nickel-plated example in 2019 for $1800. $1500-$2000.
