E.N. Welch “No. 8 Iron”, ca. 1889. A
rare clock with a small Patti movement. The clock is shown on page 348 of Ly’s book Welch clocks, Second Edition. The
8.5-inch tall iron case shows the wear of 133 years, with chips and loss of incised gilding on the front base. The brass bezel
holds a beveled glass, the porcelain dial has slight damage at the strike winding arbor, and the minute hand is a proper replacement. The 8-day, time-and-strike movement is unsigned, running (but out of plumb) and striking on a small cathedral gong. The clock
is designed to resemble an Egyptian temple, with marble blocks on the sides. Surely you can find a place for this small treasure. Horton’s sold one in 2019 for $1780. $500-$1500.
