224.              $850

German calendar wall clock, ca. 1880. A 34-inch case with mahogany veneer in grungy condition; the dial glass is modern, but the side glasses and tablet appear to be original. There is plenty of lifting of the black paint on the lower glass, but note the gilding around the calendar windows. Note also that several small wood ornaments have gone missing, and one is in the case awaiting reattachment.  The two-part porcelain dial has some hairlines, but they are not noticeable; the hands are probably original.  The 8-day, time-and-strike spring movement is not typical and looks like it might have been provided by an American company, but there is no maker’s stamp.  It is running but the strike is hung up.  There is a rod that extends down to the calendar movement, very much reminiscent of American calendar clocks, and as this rod moves upward it pulls small links forward for each calendar wheel, which then advance when the rod falls off the clock calendar wheel.  The calendar is advancing, but I’m not making any promises here.  As there is no label and the movement is unsigned, the maker is a mystery to me.  The case is badly in need of rejuvenation.  I could not find any similar models that have sold on LiveAuctioneers or Antique Clocks Price Guide; the consignor has asked to start at $850, and so we shall. $850-$1200.
