209.            $1600

Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 1”, ca., 1863. This is an early version of this iconic calendar clock, as evidenced by the ‘double OG’ door contour.  Later models had a more rounded door frame which was easier to veneer (see Ly, Seth Thomas Clocks & Movements, Vol. 1, page 90).  Here the rosewood veneer is outstanding, with very few losses (e.g., upper left of time dial bezel), and most smaller chips were blended in when the case was revarnished.  Both glasses are old and show no evidence of having been replaced.  The dials have been repainted, the calendar dial showing the labeling that was on the early models.  The moon hands are correct and period, the calendar hand is a Welch hand, the only fault I can find with this clock.  The 8-day, time-only, weight driven movement is unsigned, but is an ST movement; it is running steadily, the proper cast iron weight in the weight chute on the right.  The pendulum hanger and bob are early ST issue.  The perpetual calendar was patented by the Mix Brothers and was used in these early calendars; it is advancing properly.  The roller papers must be original.  That’s some old paper!  There is most of a black label on the back of the door.  I haven’t seen a better example of this clock; Horton’s sold a very nice example in 2019 for $2075. $1600-$2200.

Delivery to the eastern half of the US for $150.
