208. $400
L.F. & W.W. Carter weight-driven calendar, 1862-1868. This calendar clock is 30.5 inches long, veneered in mahogany. This case differs from #207 in that the case is slightly shorter
and narrower, with the bezel of the calendar dial exceeding the case width. The case edges are also flattened, rather than rounded,
indicating that it was made by the Carters rather than B.B. Lewis. In addition, the label on the calendar door states that it
was made by Elias Burwell, who obtained the right to manufacture Lewis’ calendars in 1862 and provided them to the Carters. This suggests that this clock was made toward the end of their business life, using their own cases and a Lewis calendar mechanism
manufactured by Elias Burwell. The bezels retain some of their original grain painting; both dial glasses are old, the dials
likely old repaints. All hands are correct. The unsigned weight-driven, 8-day, time-only movement is as found in #207,
driven by two 4 lb, round, gold-plated (?) weights; it is running without problem and the calendar hands are advancing appropriately. There is a good label inside and on the back of the calendar door; the inside label is plain paper, rather than black with gold lettering
(#207). All in all, a nice example of a later calendar clock from the short-lived but prolific Carter collaboration.
