Welch, Spring & Co. “Regulator Calendar No. 1”, ca.1878.  A 54-inch case veneered in rosewood with three original glasses – the dial glass is held in by the original glazing. The veneer on the outer dial bezel has been replaced and repaired on the inner bezel; the re-veneering (which is very difficult) is a bit unsatisfying.  That, and the replacement weights are the only faults I can find on this uncommon calendar clock. Moreover, the positives vastly outweigh these faults; the original dials (with just a bit of soiling, flaking, and peeling including on the calendar dial), the original hands, an original tablet as shown in Ly, Welch Clocks, Second Edition, page 189, and two labels in excellent condition (one on the back of the calendar movement noting that it was made by B.B. Lewis).  The brass plate, 8-day, time-only, two-weight movement is running without issue and the calendar is advancing.  This Welch movement is as shown in Welch Clocks (page 188); it is possible that this is a replacement movement in this clock, as there are additional cut-outs in the framing to accommodate other mounting boards.  It is also possible that the case was originally made to accept a different movement and was adapted at the factory for this movement; early examples of this model had an “upside-down” movement (see Ly, Welch Clocks page 189).  Includes a door key, with both latches working.  R.O. Schmitt sold one in 2017 for $2300; Fontaine’s sold one in 2018 for $2900.  $1500-$2500.

Delivery to the Central and Eastern time zones for $250.

Blanket-wrap delivery to the West Coast for $500.
