198.             $500

Waltham Clock Co. lever-spring banjo for Webb C. Ball, ca. 1930.  This is an unusual banjo clock from Waltham, as it has a lever-spring movement in a 40-inch, full-size case. The dial states “Webb C. Ball”, indicating that it was made for the company that standardized railroad time.  I cannot find another example like it; all the Waltham banjos that had a lever movement came in a miniature case (21 inches).  The mahogany case has cross-banded veneer around the glasses, which are original and depict a naval battle, probably in the War of 1812.  The dial glass is convex, the hands original.  The large lever movement is signed “Waltham Clock Co.”, serial number 31954 and is running, time-only.  The top finial is not like any I see illustrated in Ly’s discussion of Waltham clocks (American Clocks, Vol. 1). There is no label.  $500-$1500.
