192. $800
Presentation gilt banjo, ca. 1825. A 40.5-inch
banjo from the tip of the brass eagle finial on top to the bottom of the acorn on the base. The case sides are mahogany, the
brass side-arms likely original. The flat dial glass is modern in a heavy brass bezel, the throat and tablet glasses period/original,
and with a very well-preserved period tablet of Mount Vernon. There are a few spots where the twisted rope trim has lost its
gilding, but overall, there is little wear. The iron dial is unsigned, possibly an old repaint, held in place with two L-turns. The hands are old. The 8-day time-only movement is running, driven by a lead weight. There is a tin weight shield and
pendulum tie-down. A particularly nice example, I think. $800-$1200.
