Samuel Terry column & splat shelf
clock, 1828-1835. Step back Jack, this is not your usual 30-hour column & splat from Eli Terry’s brother. The crusty
case is 28 inches tall with an untouched finish and dark stenciling on the half-columns and splat. Notably, the entire front
of the clock is the door, with the hinge pins on the left; Sam must have been a left-hander, as only a lefty would think this was
natural (full disclosure: I am a lefty). I can find no other examples of this model online. Both glasses are original,
with the original putty; the tablet is original but has been touched up. Note the paw feet in front and the turned feet in back,
all of which look original. The wood dial shows wear around the winding holes and the minute hand may be a bit short. The 30-hour, time-and-strike wooden movement will only run briefly, with two old iron weights, and it strikes on a wire gong rather
than an iron bell. It looks like the gong has always been there. There is a good label inside. There are two lead
egg-shaped weights on the back bottom, on wires, as if they are rollers. I have no idea what purpose they serve. Do you? As noted above, no sales records that I can find. $500-$750.
