Eli Terry, Jr. & Co. “Eight-day clock”,
1835-1841. The “Company” was Blakesley and Warren Goodwin. Terry died in 1841 of consumption (tuberculosis) at the age
of 41. The case is 34 inches tall, veneered in mahogany and with an unusual top, which looks incomplete but is not, as I have
found several other examples with this design. All three glasses are period, the dial glass original. Tom Moberg repainted
the tablet, the middle glass looks like it may have been repainted, but I did not remove it to inspect. The wood dial is period,
yellowed but with an attractive center wreath. The hands are appropriate. The 8-day, wood movement is of interest here,
as it is a relatively rare Type 5.111, made by Eli Terry, Jr and was small and thin enough to fit in a narrow-depth case, as found
here (5.5 inches deep). The movement has been rebuilt but I could not get it to run or strike reliably. There are two
8-day weights and an old, embossed pendulum bob; the label is behind plastic and mostly complete. A rare clock: I could find
only two sales records for this model with a wooden movement over last 22 years. $600-$900.
