Eli Terry & Sons Patent Eight Day Shelf Clock, 1823-1831. A beautiful 39-inch case with newly gilded columns and a gold-painted splat. Also note the gold paint on the door frames. Both glasses are original, including the tablet, which is practically perfect. The dial is a weakness, the center portion has
been repainted and it appears that at one time a quartz movement was mounted to the dial. This is unfortunate, as it appears
that the center opening was carved out to accommodate the invader. The hands are period; there is no seconds hand as the shaft
on the movement is too short. There are veneer repairs on both doors and the escutcheons are wood replacements of the original
ivory pieces. Note the interesting paw feet in front and turned feet in back; the latter may be replacements. The 8-day,
time-and-strike wooden movement will run for a few minutes, with two period iron weights compounded on modern pulleys. There
is a good label inside. Despite its imperfections this is a spectacular clock, about as good as you will find, and there are
very few similar examples. $600-$1200.
