133. $500
E. Howard & Co. “No. 5 Regulator” banjo, ca.1874. A 29-inch cherry case with excellent rosewood graining and a finely polished finish. The dial glass is held in place
with the original putty, the throat and tablet glasses may be replacements, although the tablet has been touched up. The dial
has been repainted but probably should have been stripped before repainting. The hands are correct. The 8-day time-only
movement is signed, the pendulum stick and bob are original, and damascening is faintly visible on the bob. The weight is not
a proper No. 5 Howard weight and the cord is broken, so the clock could not be tested. There is a wooden weight shield at the
bottom and a pendulum tie-down. $500-$800.
