132.              $500

Howard & Davis “No. 5 Regulator”, ca. 1858. A 29-inch hardwood case with rosewood graining all around, here most visible on the wooden bezels, but the sides, when cleaned, will show off as well.  The dial glass is original, with the original putty, the throat glass original with some lifting and flaking, and the lower door glass a modern replacement; the window style is not correct to Howard & Davis.  The dial is paper, as it should be, signed and in relatively good condition for its age.  How many of us can say that?  The hands are acceptable replacements.  The 8-day movement is unsigned, driven by a No. 5 weight and regulated by a new pendulum bob on a proper stick. There is a wooden weight shield, likely modern, and a working tie-down.  The clock runs for a while and then stops, I’m not sure why.  All in all, a nice example of this early iconic banjo timepiece.  Interestingly, I cannot find a sales example for a No. 5 with curved sides; of the six I found, all had a square bottom.  The round-sided version is shown in Ly, American Clocks, Vol. 2, on page 132.  $500-$1000.
