Howard & Davis “No. 4 Regulator” banjo, ca. 1858. A 32-inch cherry case with rosewood graining that still looks good. Three old glasses, the dial glass with new putty, the tablet
probably rebacked, but I think the gold leafing is original on both glasses. Howard & Davis dials were paper, and this one
shows its age, but the signature is still strong and clear. Hands are original. The movement is signed and running strongly,
driven by a No. 4 weight. Nothing to fault here that I can see; this is the best No. 4 that I have had. That said, they
don’t bring what they ought to. $750-$1000.
