130.             $750

Howard & Davis “No. 4 Regulator” banjo, ca. 1858. A 32-inch cherry case with rosewood graining that still looks good.  Three old glasses, the dial glass with new putty, the tablet probably rebacked, but I think the gold leafing is original on both glasses.  Howard & Davis dials were paper, and this one shows its age, but the signature is still strong and clear.  Hands are original.  The movement is signed and running strongly, driven by a No. 4 weight.  Nothing to fault here that I can see; this is the best No. 4 that I have had.  That said, they don’t bring what they ought to.  $750-$1000.
