128.             $1500

Wallace Goodwin “Baltimore banjo”, 1840-1861. Goodwin worked in N. Attleboro, MA as noted on dial, in cahoots with Albert Tifft and Wallace Whiting in the 1850’s.  This ‘Baltimore banjo’ is 32.5 inches long in cherry with rosewood graining that remains very evident on this clean-finish case.  All glasses are old, but the dial glass appears to have been replaced.  The dial is paper, probably original, signed and in good condition considering its age.  The hands are period, but the minute hand has been repaired.  The pinned movement is running well, driven by an old cast iron weight; the pendulum stick is gilded so as to be visible through the throat glass.  There is an inked inscription at the bottom that I cannot read.  Only two W Goodwin listings in the Antique Clocks Price Guide and one on LiveAuctioneers, none of which are Baltimore banjos.  This style of banjo is not common; Schmitt Horan sold one last month for $2400.  $1500-$2500.
