111.            $200

S.C. Spring & Co. Eight-day shelf clock, 1864-1868. Mr. Spring had a very distinctive style to his weight-driven shelf clocks, most noticeably the almost surreal tablet, unlike any other manufacturer’s.  Here we seem to be looking through a portal or bridge opening to another bridge with what appears to be a full moon overhead; or am I dreaming?  The case is 30.5 inches tall with rosewood veneer and tortoise shell columns and gold (painted?) capitals and plinths.  Both glasses are old/original, the tablet has old tissue backing, but I don’t think it is original, as most of these tablets have been replaced.  The style is correct.  The contoured metal dial shows considerable chipping, the hands are period.  The Joseph Ives-style 8-day, time-and-strike strap brass movement is running, driven by two large iron weights; the strike hammer is missing the wire gong and will need adjustment.  The black and gold backwall label has lost much of the lettering.  The most recent sale I can find was for $250 in 2016 at R.O. Schmitt.  $200-$400.
