John Birge ______ “Patent Brass Eight Day Shelf Clock”. The loss of the label and the lack of a maker’s stamp on the movement prevent precise identification of the maker, but it likely involves
John Birge in Bristol CT in the 1830’s, during which time he was associated with multiple short-lived companies making empire cases
with strap-brass movements like this one. The beautifully refinished, figured-mahogany case is 37.5 inches tall on paw feet
(with large atypical turned feet in back) with full columns on each side, again veneered in flame mahogany. The glass over the
dial is old but probably not original; the two lower glasses are modern with unsigned tablets. The wooden dial is clean and
well-preserved, and has been lacquered for protection; there is an old mirror (possibly original) in a tin pull-up that allows you
to view the brass movement; the pull wire has come off but is present. The large strap-brass movement does not bear a maker’s
stamp, but as noted, is likely from a Birge-Ives collaboration. It is running and striking assuredly, regulated by a period
pendulum bob and two large iron weights. A very nice example. $250-$500.
