Seth Thomas “Octagon Top C”, ca. 1870. A miniature
cottage, just over 9 inches tall with good rosewood veneer, nicely polished all around. The dial glass appears to be original,
the interesting tablet may be a replacement. The dial and the ST hands are new. Seth Thomas made more cottage clock models
than you can shake a stick at (see pages 213-230 in Ly’s book, Seth Thomas Clocks & Movements, Vol. 1). Then, to make it
more complicated, ST made multiple cottage movements – 17 are shown in the reference cited. This example contains the C-type
movement, but other movements have also been found in this model. What is particularly notable about this example is the unusual
label, which denotes a Thomaston location, and a manufacture date after 1865. Many of these models have a Plymouth Hollow label. The movement is signed and running, 30 hours, time-only. $50-$150.
