Antique American Clocks July 2022
18. $2500
E. Howard & Co. “Watch Clock for Two Watchman”,ca. 1888. You want big? This clock can be found on page 114 of Ly’s “American Clocks, Vol. 2”. The walnut case has an old/original finish and is 74 inches tall and 26 inches wide, with a 16-inch dial. The door glass is original. There are some blemishes on the top right of the door and wear around the handle; the watchmen’s punch mechanisms have been removed but the mounting holes are evident. The dial has been repainted and one small decorative piece on the top right has been replaced; there may have been ball finials on the top back corners at one time. Hands are original. The signed movement is 9.5 inches long and 4.5 inches wide, time-only, driven by a large nickel weight, running 8 days. The pendulum rod is original, with an unusually damascened pendulum bob. There is a complete tie-down for the pendulum and two keys for the door, as well as a winder. The clock was running effortlessly when I picked it up. Please note that the photos here are of the clock leaning against a wall, and so some do not include the weight. This is a clean and impressive piece if you have the room. $2500-$4500.
